End Of Tenancy Checklist: What To Do When You Move

By | 3rd July 2015
Moving home is often an exciting - albeit stressful - time. However, you may have plenty of tasks to complete before your current lease is over, including any end of tenancy cleaning obligations. Over one-third (36 per cent) of people in England and Wales lived in rented accommodation when the last census was taken in 2011. If you're one of these people, and just about to move out of your rental, this checklist should help you remember what to resolve before handing over the keys. Inform utilities Your gas, electricity and water providers will need to be told that you're switching house, otherwise you could be billed twice. Send them your current meter readings and new address details so they can get in touch about final payments. Check your inventory Most tenants are given an inventory at the beginning of their tenancy that outlines any furniture or possessions that came with the property. Make sure everything is still present and in the same condition as when you moved in. End of tenancy cleaning Your landlord may have written into your contract that the property must be spotless before you vacate. This is where end of tenancy cleaning services can prove extremely useful, as you can rely on professionals to leave the place sparkling while you concentrate on getting ready to move. Redirect mail While you may remember to tell most people you're moving house, there's still a chance you'll forget someone. Schools, GPs, the local council and a variety of other people and organisations may have important documentation to send you, so set up a mail redirect system to ensure no post gets lost.
